Two new teams again! We had not seen the Rockies or the Nationals before last night. After a rather uneventful (though bug-filled) trip through Kansas, we made it to Denver and arrived at Beth & Jason’s. (Thanks again, by the way!) Prior to the game, we were discussing what the possible outcomes could be, and we all agreed that it probably wasn’t going to be pretty since neither the Rockies nor the Nationals are expecially good teams.
Little did we know that we would be treated to an 8-inning shut-out performance from Rockies starter Jason Marquis. The Nationals starter (a rookie) also did well: 7-innings, 1 run. Not too shabby! Also, it was a speedy game– 9 innings in just over 2 hours (2:12, to be precise). Excellent!
Our seats were out in the “Rock Pile,” a bleacher section in centerfield. And, at $4 a ticket, you can’t go wrong! They were actually very good seats, considering our budget. Of course, in the 15 parks to date, we have not had a bad seat yet. However, this was only the 3rd game in which we had seats in fair territory. Not that it really matters since we’re always so far up/out that there’s no chance of us catching anything anyway. One thing that I didn’t see coming was the garden that’s hiding behind the center field wall. Beth and Jason told us that the fountains shoot up when a Rockies player hits a homerun, but there were none hit last night.
In the upper deck at Coors Field, there is a row of purple seats. These are the “Mile High” seats which are at exactly 1 mile above sea level. The Rockies also have a mascot named “Dinger” (I’m not making this stuff up), who looks like Barney the Dinosaur’s triceratops cousin. Beth and Jason were telling us that one thing people try and do when Dinger is in the stands is turn his head around backwards. Mean, but funny. All around, it was a good time in Denver. The Rockies won a good game, and it was nice to spend some time with the cousins in Colorado.
