2009 Game #25
- Atlanta Braves at Florida Marlins
Final Score: Braves
6, Marlins 3 (10 innings)
Hot Dog - 4/5
Yes, you read
that correctly. We went to Land Shark Stadium
to watch the Marlins! They used to play at
Dolphin Stadium, but apparently the naming rights were sold to Land Shark a few
weeks ago. We have no idea what kind of business
Land Shark is. Dolphin Sta– I mean, Land
Shark Stadium is also really, really, really, really… orange.
We walked from the concourse out into the stadium, and both Rich and I said, “Wow. That’s orange.” But, in all fairness, this is where the Miami Dolphins play, and their team colors include orange. Anyway, the Marlins organization is doing many things wrong from a fan perspective. First of all, look at the stadium. Not the orange-ness, but rather the lack of fan-ness.
So what’s the
problem? Well, there are a few, starting
with the fact that the cheapest seat was $12.
Those of us who are familiar with Fenway/Yankee prices are thinking, “Twelve
bucks?! WOW!” But the problem is there are no fans in the stadium! Charge $5 and you can start filling more seats
with families of 10! Also, the price of a
hot dog is $5.00. Do Dollar Dogs, Marlins! You need to do something to fill those seats!! How are you going to pay for (and continue supporting)
that new stadium you’re building?!?! I don’t
know if maybe the Marlins just have lousy marketing people, or they just don’t care. Two things the Marlins do have are Billy Marlin
and Billy Marlin, Jr. We didn’t see Junior,
but Billy, Sr. caught the ceremonial first pitch. The Marlins also have the Marlin Mermaids. Um… lame.
And useless. Save the money they are
paying these ladies, and hire a new marketing director!!!
There were some…
loud… fans behind us out in the bleachers.
They were also big fans of Marlins center fielder Cody Ross. They cheered so loud while he was in the field,
that he even turned and acknowledged their existence a few times. Ha ha!
Cody showed his appreciation for their support by throwing a ball their way
at the end of an inning. Of course, most
of those fans were themselves thrown out of the park in the 10th inning because
they were obnoxious.
I didn’t realize until today that we had gone 24 games without seeing a blimp. And I only realized that when I saw the blimp over Dolph– I mean Land Shark Stadium. There were some highlights at the game, however. (Hanley Ramirez’ 0 for 4 with 3 strikeouts was not one of them.)
Also, since Dolphin–
ahem, Land Shark Stadium is convertible for football, the seats in left field are
retracted for baseball. This leaves all those
sections empty. At first, we were wondering
why no one was sitting there, but when we looked closer… it’s a lovely potted plant! And no way to actually get to the seats.
